Licensing Coordinator (Freelance)

The Licensing Coordinator will assist the Licensing Director to grow Azuki‘s catalog through discovering new manga to license and building relationships with publishers.

This is a part-time contract position, with a potential for promotion to full-time work in the future. Azuki is a fast-moving startup environment, and ideal candidates will be able to operate independently to creatively solve problems. You will work directly under the Licensing Director.


  • Create proposals for new titles and pitch them to publishers in person in Japan
  • Search for and evaluate new manga titles to publish, based on strategic direction from Licensing Director
  • Assist Azuki team with publisher relations, including interpreting during meetings and translating emails
  • Keep track of trends in the manga industry and community, including sales numbers and cultural trends
  • Advise members of the Azuki team during contract negotiations and strategic planning

Required Skills & Experience:

  • JLPT 1, 2, or equivalent
  • Proficient in business Japanese
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in Japanese and English
  • Competent at translation and interpretation both to/from Japanese and English
  • Strong knowledge of manga as an art form and cultural phenomenon

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Lives in Japan
  • Familiarity with manga licensing contracts and rights management best practices
  • Existing relationships with Japanese manga publishers
  • Experience closing content licensing deals, especially in manga or other publishing industries
  • Avid reader of manga
